The nominees for this year's Vodafone Ghana Music Awards was recently released and as usual, the list comes with a lot of controversies. One of the categories which was introduced this year -- the reggae/dancehall artist of the year comes out as somewhat debatable with the disappearance of the "dancehall King" himself -- Shatta Wale. Of course I wasn't really counting on him to win but I'm among a number of people who seemed surprised by the news. The category however is been contested by the likes of Kaakie,Ras Kuuku, Episode, Stonebwoy, Mzvee and Samini . From the list we have seen so far, it seems that Shatta is missing in all the other categories as well. It will however be recalled that Shatta Wale sometime ago declared that he had no intentions in receiving any "bogus" awards from "cheater-house" anymore. Also, in a series of videos released online, the self-acclaimed King of dancehall rained insults on Chatter house and it's award scheme. Also he made it very clear that he did not want to be involved in any award scheme in a facebook post below. This could have been a major factor -- although he once released a song that he didn't need any award from Chatter house some time ago, they still went ahead and nominated him and he proudly received the awards. Guess this time was a bit different!
Honestly, it's really obvious that Stonebwoy will easily emerge as the winner because I think he is more deserving even though the others are also worthy opponents.
Another category that came as surprise to me was the introduction of a newcomer, Evangelist Diana Asamoah in the gospel song of the year category. For years I've always wondered why the woman of God was never recognised by the VGMA for her good works in the gospel industry. Finally she can be recognized as such.
Also worthy of note is Lynx entertainment recording artist Mzvee who has so far grabbed four top spots in the nomination lists including artiste of the year award. We hope that she also emerge victorious in some categories if not all because she is truly extra-talented. Go #tip-toe movement.
Dynamic music group 4x4 also stood out in 4 categories including Highlife song of the year, Best collaboration of the year, Best Music Video of the year
and Best Group of the year
See the rest of the nominations we've gathered so far and let us know what you think!
